Songs like “Gobstopper” bring experimentation into the kitchen. The beat constantly shifts and transforms, much like tasting as you go and unexpectedly discovering a new flavor combination that works better than the original plan. It’s the soundtrack for improvisation—adding extra spice, turning leftovers into something elevated, trusting instinct over strict instruction. Meanwhile, “Welcome to the Show” arrives with theatrical energy, sounding like the final stages of cooking when the plating begins and the kitchen becomes a stage. Dilla’s production swells with confidence, turning the act of serving food into a presentation worthy of applause.

This months’ film is ‘Love Jones’, a poetic love story about a couple and their struggle to define their relationship in late 90’s Chicago.

It chooses tenderness and warmth. Not just with the characters but with the music.

Not the polished kind. Not the Instagram version. But the REAL kind—the kind that hesitates, second-guesses, and sometimes gets it wrong.

On their initial date, a meeting at the lazy haire, a Jamaican dance & cigar club. Nina hop’s on the back of Darius’ motorcycle and they flow into the wind.

Just a couple of days after meeting at a poetry club, The Sanctuary , Darius shows up to Nina’s home unannounced to ask her on a date , a small gathering at his homeboys house, after the date Darius offered to walk Nina home which leads to their first kiss. It was soft , organic and igniting, the kind where you could tell that all of their senses were in motion. They both tried to fight it but the chemistry was ahead of them both and Nina even tells Darius that she “can’t get down like that” on the first meeting. They both agree , (but little did she know, destiny had other plans) but one thing led to another and they had sex. Now, if that wasn’t the sexiest love scene …and then.. Darius made Breakfast?! (Omelette du fromage)

They’re figuring it out in real time without the instant gratification of cellular phones and social media. It almost feels (synonym for messy) to watch if you’ve been through love. The kind of rawness that touches you without permission.

There’s a scene and song for every stage of connection—the spark, the confusion, the pullback, the return. It’s messy in a way that feels honest. And honesty, in any form—film, music, poetry—is what keeps culture alive.

You can hear Love Jones in the DNA of artists who aren’t afraid to sit in vulnerability. The ones who understand that not every bar has to be hard to hit.

I imagine that on her train ride to New York from Chicago to see her ex , Nina listens to a little CD playlist that features her favorite songs , on & on - Erykah Badu, Down low (nobody has to know) - R. Kelly , One in a million - Aaliyah , Mellowsmooth- Maxwell, & Voyage to Atlantis — Isley Brothers—all while mentally preparing. Passing strangers by, snapping portraits and thinking of Darius the entire time. I questioned her decision to visit her ex(he’s so irrelevant we forgot his name) but I sat through it as only a supportive homegirl would while also holding her accountable — Why Nina ?!

She exits the New York train station heads north for manhattan and reaches her destination when she reluctantly arrives at what’s his names apartment, I mean Derrick, I think.

But the way Darius handled her was more even poetic than his word. He put his pride to the side, did not shame her and even walked her home after her date with Wood turned sour. This type of care truly allows a woman to rest in her feminine. Darius’ actions says a lot about his respect and admiration for Nina and we need more Darius Lovehall’s to protect our sisters, friends & daughters.

On April 21, 2026, the cranes in the sky singer debuted her new map-like hairstyle on Instagram via a slideshow of progress photos. The hairstyle featured lines and grids that appeared cartographic — like a map. Is this perhaps a new visual language?

Today, I want to write an article that, honestly, probably should have been the first article for Show Discipline Magazine. As much as we love hip-hop, this topic sits at the center of it.

This article is about hyperboles in hip-hop. It’s become a relevant conversation, especially with everything going on in the media and the culture right now. But before getting into that, let’s slow it down:

What is a hyperbole?

A hyperbole is nothing more—and nothing less—than an exaggeration.

And in hip-hop, exaggeration is everywhere.

Every rapper exaggerates in music. You can pull up almost any song and hear it—whether it’s about skill, money, status, or dominance. That’s part of the art form. That’s part of what we want.

Rap has always been about projection. It’s about expression at its highest level. It’s about turning yourself into something larger than life. But lately, there’s been more conversation about what hyperboles mean—and what comes with them. A lot of that ties into the current discourse around J. Cole. One of the biggest rappers of the last 20 years. Everybody knows where he stands right now—dropping “7 Minute Drill” and then stepping back, saying he doesn’t want to be part of the beef anymore.

The culture had something to say about that. Especially in a moment where diss tracks, competition, and dominance are front and center again. There was a conversation I believe on the Melo Podcast—where he was asked: based on his catalog, his feature runs, everything he’s done… does he think he’s the best rapper in the game? And that question matters. Because if you listen to his music, he says things like: “Who puts your favorite rapper on a verse and bodies him after he FaceTimed him?” That’s not humility that’s dominance. That’s talk. That’s rap.

And that’s exactly what it’s supposed to sound like. But when asked directly, he essentially says no—he doesn’t actually believe he’s the best. That’s where things get complicated. Because historically, when you ask a rapper if they’re the best, 99.9% of the time the answer is yes. Not even out of arrogance—but because that’s the role. That’s the mindset.

Hip-hop, at its core, is about becoming your most confident self. It’s about expression without limits. It’s about saying, “I’m the greatest,” whether it’s objectively true or not.

That’s where hyperbole lives. So when an artist steps outside of that—even if it’s honest—it disrupts something in the culture. Now add in the bigger picture: Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Cole—the three names always grouped together. Look at the situation with Kendrick’s “Not Like Us.” Look at the claims, the accusations, the intensity. Then look at Drake’s reported legal response toward Universal Music Group—framing it as defamation of character.

But from another angle, what is that record really? It’s hyperbole. It’s an exaggeration pushed to its sharpest edge. And whether people like it or not, that’s always been part of hip-hop. So now the question becomes: When do we take rappers literally—and when do we recognize the performance? Because, as fans, we don’t treat everything equally. we pick and choose. We decide what’s “just rap” and what feels real. We decide what to believe and what to dismiss. And I’ll be honest—I do it too. Everybody does.

But that creates a tension in the culture. Because on one hand, we celebrate exaggeration. On the other hand, we react to it like it’s fact when it crosses certain lines

Hyperbole is not a flaw in hip-hop.

It is hip-hop.

The real question is whether the culture still understands the difference between performance and reality—or if that line is getting harder to see.

No current drop, but the presence never really leaves. Alfredo 2 is still hovering in the air while The Alchemist keeps the chemistry active on the road. And let’s not revise history that Alfredo is a modern classic. Before that, You Only Live 2wice. Before that, a run that quietly outpaced most of his class. That’s the part people keep skimming over.

Gibbs came in around the same window as J. Cole, Big Sean, and Meek Mill that early 2010s wave where expectations were loud, and careers were supposed to be obvious. He never followed that script. No industry safety net. No clean narrative. Just product.

And the product holds up.

Technical, but not sterile. Street, but not boxed in. Competitive in a way that the era doesn’t always reward anymore. He’s taken shots, absorbed them, and kept moving. No rebrand necessary.

So now the conversation shifts to legacy.

How many classics does it take? Is one undeniable and a stack of near classics enough? Or do we keep moving the goalposts because the machine never fully co-signed him?

The résumé is there. The respect is there. The only thing still being debated is the label.

We just got a rare sit down with Jay-Z via GQ and that alone matters. Hov doesn’t do interviews like that anymore. Not casually, not without intent. The last time we saw this kind of long form engagement, it meant something.

Naturally, everyone zeroed in on what he said about rap battles. And yes, it’s worth discussing but also, what did people expect him to say?

This is Jay-Z. A figure who’s built a career on evolution, not staying in one place. Even in his most competitive era, he wasn’t defined by drawn out battle culture. He engaged when necessary but he’s always been forward facing.

So when he asks, “Do we need battling?” that’s not dismissal. That’s perspective.

Right now I’m reading Freedom Is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis, and it has me thinking about how easily we treat global events as if they exist in separate worlds.

The book moves between conversations about Ferguson, Palestine, and movements across the Middle East. What Davis shows is something simple but powerful: struggles rarely stay in one place. The same forces—state power, militarization, political resistance—often appear in different forms across the world.

Reading it today feels strange in a way. The essays and interviews in the book mostly come from 2013–2016, yet so much of what Davis describes still echoes in current conflicts and political debates. The locations change, the headlines change, but the patterns remain familiar.

There’s a quote often attributed to Albert Einstein that keeps coming to mind: he once said he didn’t know what weapons would be used in World War III, but that World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones. Whether taken literally or metaphorically, the point is clear—war has a way of reshaping the world long after the bombs stop falling.

Conflict abroad doesn’t stay abroad. It moves through media coverage, political debates, and cultural expression. It influences the way nations see themselves and the way citizens understand history. Journalism becomes part of that process. The stories we choose to tell—and the ones we ignore—shape how future generations understand the present moment.

That’s why books like Davis’s feel so relevant. Her argument is that movements for justice don’t exist in isolation. Struggles against mass incarceration, police violence, and systemic inequality in the United States often intersect with broader global conversations about power and militarization.

Hip-hop has long recognized those connections. Artists like Yasiin Bey have spoken about global inequality and traveled abroad to highlight how political struggles in different parts of the world echo each other. Baby Keem’s latest project, Casino, feels like a major moment in his catalog. The Vegas-themed rollout, the continued creative ties to pgLang, and the family connection with Kendrick Lamar all frame the album as another step forward for one of the more unpredictable voices in hip-hop right now.

What stands out immediately is how much more of Keem the listener gets on this project. He opens up about family, touches on his relationship with his mother, and gives glimpses into the ups and downs of his relationships with women. There’s a sense throughout the album that Keem is responding to the outside noise as well, almost like he heard some of the criticisms about his previous work and decided to address them head-on through the music.

Production plays a major role in making Casino work. The beats are bold, polished, and often unpredictable, matching Keem’s style as an artist who rarely stays in one lane for too long.

Standout records include “Good Flirts,” “Casino,” “House Money,” “Sex Appeal,” “Two Shorts,” and the sharp “Circus Circus Freestyle.” Each track showcases Keem’s willingness to experiment with flows, vocal inflections, and different sonic approaches.

There’s a lot happening in hip hop right now beefs, posthumous albums, and plenty more. But I want to focus on something I didn’t think would happen at all: Jay-Z potentially dropping another album.

Could he be gearing up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt? Recently, he put Dead Presidents 1 on streaming services, reminding everyone there were two versions of the track. The one most people remember is the album version. That detail alone sparks conversations about the two sides of Jay-Z: the hustler on the mic and the 2.5 billionaire mogul he is today. His business acumen is often so dominant that it overshadows his skill as a rapper, making this all the more intriguing.

Even though he’s repeatedly told people he’s not dropping new music (going as far as having Memphis Bleek relay the message) the buzz keeps building. Something feels like it’s coming.

In a perfect world, we celebrate the Reasonable Doubt 30th anniversary with a grand one-night show at MSG. Then, Jay-Z drops a new album. And finally, he headlines the Super Bowl halftime show. The game needs him. Hip hop needs him.

Lately I’ve been listening to The Fall from J. Cole, and if you really listen to “Safety,” there’s a familiar texture in there. It echoes U.N.I.T.Y. by Queen Latifah, Khadijah James forever in my mind.

That sent me back to rewatching Living Single. And it struck me how often we under-credit Queen Latifah’s cultural weight.

Her career mirrors another industry giant: Will Smith. Mike Larry.

Both gave us era defining sitcoms Living Single and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air shows that still hold up because the writing, the chemistry, and the cultural specificity were real. Not nostalgia-driven.

Both came up through hip-hop with credibility intact. Then both transitioned into serious film careers not cameo runs, not novelty casting but decorated, sustained careers across genres. Comedy. Drama. Action. Animation. Producing.

That kind of longevity isn’t luck. It’s discipline. Reinvention. Cultural intelligence.

We talk about impact in hip-hop as if it only lives in bars and Billboard charts. But building platforms that shape how Black life is portrayed on television for decades? That’s impact. Crossing mediums without losing identity? That’s legacy.

Black History Month shouldn’t just be about pioneers we’ve archived. It should also celebrate architects who are still standing.

With a few major releases already setting the tone, Don Toliver adds real fuel to the run with Octane.

From the first record, the project is immediately engaging. Octane feels intentional, 18 tracks that move with momentum instead of just stacking vibes. The features are well chosen and never distracting. Travis Scott, Yeat, Teezo Touchdown, and others slide in naturally without hijacking the album.

The title feels deliberate. “Octane” reads like speed, engines, motion, motorcycle energy. Don Toliver has always anchored his albums around a central aesthetic, and this one leans into movement and intensity rather than haze. It works.

Standout records include “Tiramisu,” “E85,” “ATM,” and “Long Way to Calabasas.” The first half of the album is especially strong, with a tight run of songs that reward full listens instead of playlist skips.

There’s also a noticeable emotional throughline. Don sounds grounded, locked in, and very much in love with Kali, something that comes through clearly in both the melodies and the restraint. The album feels confident without being loud about it.

With a tour on the way, Octane sounds built for live settings. This isn’t just a drop and disappear project. It feels like a statement moment in Don Toliver’s run.

Tap in and sit with it. The replay value is there.

Breakfast of Champions Playlist 🥣

Before Jermaine Cole became one of rap’s most revered MCs—long before the debates, the crowns, and the unofficial, involuntary induction into the so-called “Big 3”—he was just a twenty-something college kid with a dollar and a dream. The Fayetteville phenom built that dream brick by brick and bar for bar, with the patience and discipline of a dedicated executive chef. Each verse became a quiet affirmation: stay present, stay hungry, trust the process. Like a well-developed recipe, Cole’s music sharpened over time—no shortcuts, just repetition, refinement, and belief.

Tracks like “Huntin’ Wabbits” make it easy for Cole to state his ambitions while positioning himself confidently as the one, not the two. It’s the perfect soundtrack for cutting, dicing, and cleaning fresh produce—precision work that requires attention to timing, temperature, and balance. This is breakfast only fit for a champion. Cole’s inner dialogue across his catalog penetrates the senses like the smell of a warm, home-cooked morning meal—nostalgic, grounding, therapeutic. The magna cum laude rapper, Jermaine Lamar Cole—once affectionately dubbed “the therapist”—has always had that effect.

On “Album of the Year (Freestyle)”, Cole resists confinement, moving outside hip-hop’s expected frameworks the same way a confident cook moves beyond strict recipes. The message is clear: trust your instincts, use fresh ingredients, and season thoroughly. Cole’s approach mirrors the kitchen mindset—technique matters, but intuition separates good from great. His restraint, honesty, and self-awareness turn simplicity into excellence.

As fans await The Fall Off, Breakfast of Champions serves as a reminder of how far intention can take you. Cooking and creating music live by the same code: repetition breeds mastery, patience sharpens flavor, and authenticity always shows in the final product. Whether at the stove or in the studio, J. Cole proves that champions aren’t made in moments—they’re made in mornings like these, quietly putting in the work before the world wakes up.

Cole is boastfully charming and equally nostalgic. We paired the breakfast of champions playlist with a home-made Cinnamon Toast Crunch recipe, courtesy of Half-baked harvest with serving suggestions.

Home-made Cinnamon Toast Crunch 🥣

Ingredients

• 1 tablespoon of Cinnamon

• 1/2 cup granulated sugar

• 1 1/4 cup white whole or whole wheat pastry flour

• 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour

• 1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt

• 2 sticks (1 cup) cold salted butter cup up into 1/2 pieces

• 1/2 cup of cold water

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• 2-4 salted butter , melted

Instructions

1. “Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Make the cinnamon sugar. In small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon cinnamon and the sugar.

2. In a food processor, combine the whole wheat flour, flour, remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, salt, and butter. Pulse until the mix clumps together to form pea-size balls. Add the vanilla, and 1/2 cup cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together and forms a ball. If the dough feels dry, add 1-2 tablespoons additional water.

3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and form into a ball. Divide the dough in half. Working with one piece of dough at a time, roll the dough as thin as you can, preferably an 1/8-inch thick (about the thickness of a quarter). Transfer the dough to a large piece of parchment paper. Brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar, gently pressing the sugar into the dough. Cut into 1/2-inch squares. Repeat with the remaining dough.

4. Carefully transfer the parchment paper to a baking sheet. Separate the squares, spacing them a 1/2 inch apart. 5. Bake 12-14 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool completely, then store in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Enjoy…with milk, a top ice cream, or simply by the handful.”

A$AP Rocky just dropped Don’t Be Dumb, and after what felt like an eight-year rollout, he actually delivered. Not just a good album—arguably one of the strongest projects of his career.

Some of my favorite moments live in the details. “Stop Snitching” sets a tone that’s confrontational without being performative. The Westside Gunn feature feels natural, not forced—two aesthetics overlapping instead of clashing. The Doechii feature works in a way that feels intentional, not trendy, and Rocky gives her room to bend the record instead of boxing her in. The intros and beat switches are especially sharp. There’s a confidence here that doesn’t need to announce itself.

Rocky’s been on a full media run too—Academics, Ebro, Joe Budden—so the context around the album matters. He’s been pretty open about why he moves the way he does now, how he sees the A$AP Mob in its current form, and how his creative outlook has shifted with time, fatherhood, and distance from the industry’s noise. That perspective shows up in the music. This doesn’t sound like someone chasing relevance. It sounds like someone defining it on his own terms.

I will say this: some of the singles like High Jack or Tailor Swift that he dropped earlier didn’t make the final cut, and I was curious how they might’ve fit into the album’s ecosystem. There is a deluxe out now, and he’s hinted that there’s more on the way—possibly another side altogether. He’s also teasing a Rihanna feature, which exists in that dangerous space between “historic” and “never actually happening,” so we’ll see.

Harlem Renaissance, Continued

Teyana Taylor’s Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination mark a real shift. Not just crossover success, but recognition at the highest level for someone who’s always moved between music, fashion, film, and performance on her own terms. It’s Harlem artistry aging into legacy.

And then there’s Max B. His return from incarceration isn’t just a personal milestone—it’s cultural. The wave he helped create never fully disappeared, and his freedom reopens a chapter that influenced an entire generation of artists, Rocky included.

Taken together, this doesn’t feel like nostalgia. It feels like continuation. Harlem isn’t looking backward—it’s folding its past into the present and letting it evolve.

We’re back with another Loop Theory songs stuck on repeat, the kind you let run until the details start revealing themselves.

Lately, that record lives inside Conway the Machine’s You Can’t Kill God With Bullets specifically “Diamonds.” The album itself is strong front to back: sharp production, focused energy, and features that actually earn their place. But “Diamonds” is the record that keeps pulling me back.

Two of my favorite rappers on one track: Conway the Machine and Roc Marciano. No gimmicks. Just bars.

They trade verses in tight four-bar bursts, back and forth, like fighters sparring. The beat is stripped down and minimal, giving the lyrics room to breathe.

Heavy symbolism, sharp metaphors, and that understated confidence both of them specialize in. Nothing rushed. Nothing forced. Presicion.

Conway continues to prove why Drumwork stands strong as its own lane, even as the Griselda conversation lingers in the background. There’s a little smoke in the air there, sure—but that’s a discussion for another time.

For now, “Diamonds” is in rotation. Heavy rotation.

Max B recently dropped Public Domain 7: The Purge, but more importantly, we just got Coke Wave 3.5: Narcos with French and Max adding another chapter to the Coke Wave saga. This series has always been bigger than just mixtapes; it’s a sound, a moment, a movement. And this release feels like a reminder of that.

What really stood out to me was hearing Chinx on multiple records. Hearing Max, French, and Chinx together again hits different. Rest in peace to Chinx those records feel like history being preserved, not just nostalgia.

Production wise, you’ve got joints with Metro, and of course Harry Fraud is all over this in the best way possible. That sound? Timeless. Some early standouts for me on first listen:

I was just listening to a Lil Uzi Vert record fire, by the way, but this article isn’t about Uzi. This one’s overdue. This one’s about Doechii.

Shout out to Doechii. And honestly, as I was thinking about it, I don’t believe we’ve ever given her a full, proper article at Show Discipline. We may have alluded to her in the past, but a real breakdown? Nah. And that’s on us because this moment has been earned.

I first remember hearing Doechii on “What It Is (Block Boy)” with Kodak Black. That’s where she really clicked for me. That was my entry point. But then , there was Nissan Altima, the earlier joints, the groundwork long before the debut, long before the Grammy win, long before people started acting like they just discovered her.

Over the past six months, there’s been a lot of conversation around Doechii. Some of it is loud. Some of it is flat-out disrespectful. I’m not even interested in unpacking that here. That kind of noise usually comes from people who don’t fully comprehend the music or the culture. Doechii heard all the chatter and included her response in her new song with SZA. Adin Ross, an uncultured streamer, thought that somehow this was a diss track about him. Unfortunately, the only lines that I could see being about him are when she refers to people sucking rappers off from the back…but if it’s not about you, then why you…never mind

What’s more interesting to me is what happens when you actually listen.

While digging into the music again, I caught something that really stood out. The record she released with SZA—on repeat, something felt familiar. So I ran it back. And then I ran it back again.

There it was.

The drums.

“What Happened to That Boy?”

Clipse. Birdman. The Neptunes.

Pharrell and Chad.

Once you hear it, you can’t unhear it. And the crazy part? It’s not flipped in a lazy way. It’s not screaming nostalgia. It’s subtle. Clean. Respectful. And Doechii sounds comfortable in that pocket like she belongs there.

That’s what stood out most. She wasn’t trying to prove anything. She was in it. The record is an easy listen, especially if you’re used to some of her more left-field or high-concept work.

That Neptune’s lineage has a way of revealing who’s really built for longevity. And Doechii? She passed the test effortlessly.

Doechii is doing important work right now. She’s taking risks. She’s standing on business. And she’s carving out a lane that feels rooted, but not restricted.
