COVER STORY: LLOYD BANKS
The punch line king is back. Lloyd Banks has returned from his hiatus as one of the most lyrical rappers in the past 2 decades. He has been forgotten in conversations about who’s the top lyricist of all time. His loyal fans have been keeping his name alive and are constantly reminding people about the legacy of Banks. But his latest project has shown that he hasn’t lost a step and isn’t afraid to stick to his guns.
COTI or The Course of The Inevitable is the name of Lloyd Banks’s latest project. The last studio album he released was in 2010, HFM2. But since then he hasn’t been quite. He released at least 6 mixtapes between 2011 and 2016. Frequently during this time, I would see PLK making claims that he wasn’t interested in the critique or lack of critique on his projects. After HFM2 they’re wasn’t a lot of support being shown to him in the industry.
A good example would be his relationship with the legendary New York Radio station Hot 97. Before Bobby Shmurda made Hot Nigga and it took off. Lloyd Banks had a record over the same beat. He took it to Hot 97 and it did not receive the same attention that Bobby did.
Nonetheless, Banks hasn’t let the lack of support slow him down. He took a break before releasing COTI. He sat back and watched the game. During that time rappers like Roc Marci, Freddie Gibbs, and Griselda were having their moment. This climate change made it a perfect time to release his latest project.
COTI is a project that has three verses on every song. Which is great for me, it’s an album full of raps. My favorite song is probably Drop 5. It has a great chorus, which I think Banks doesn’t get enough credit for. The project features artists such as Freddie Gibbs, Styles P., and Benny The Butcher. I can’t wait to see if there will be more content that will come from this project.
