COVER STORY: ROYCE 5'9"
I’ve been thinking a lot about what changes I want to make since we’ve gone paid. What kind of artists we want to write about. There are gonna be some changes for the better. But before I switch up things I still want to pay homage to certain artists, one of them being Royce 5’9”.
“ I think they did the right thing by giving it to Nas but also they did the right thing by nominating Royce”
Detroit’s Legend. Royce has an incredible story to tell. He recently in the past few years started telling personal things about himself through music. Some people might say all Royce used to rap about his guns and his dick. In the more recent years, he’s covered the birth of his first child, stories about his father’s drug addiction, and regrets of his past in more detail than ever.
This year the Grammys nominated The Allegory for best rap album of the year. Much deserved but even for a Royce fan like me, it was surprising. I think they did the right thing by giving it to Nas but also they did the right thing by nominating Royce. The Allegory was a great album produced majority by Royce. My favorite song on the project is undeniably I Play Forever. The song features Grafh and was originally Grafh’s song until Royce decided it would fit better on his project. The verse that Nickle Nine raps on this song is on point. There are so many great flows on here it reminds me of how Lil’ Wayne used to rap in 2007.
One of my other favorite songs on The Allegory is On the Block. This track features scratches (yes this is hip-hop guys) from DJ Premier, Royce’s PRhyme partner in crime. The album features Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher, and Westside all on different tracks.
Royce should be in everyone’s top 5. He’s definitely in mine. The latter part of his career has been amazing to see. He has come along way. He’s been sober for a long time and his raps have been noticeably sharper. Royce is demonstrating how to have longevity in your career while managing your mistakes.
