COVER STORY/DRAKE
Drake may be one of the most fearless artists in the past 20 years. He’s not afraid to try new sounds and genres. He’s even rapped in Spanish in the past couple of years. Drake came into the game as a rapper that made R&B music that could compete with Chris Brown or Trey Songz.
His latest project Honestly, Nevermind is a complete Dance album from the Toronto legend. The project was met with mixed reviews when it became available on streaming platforms. A lot of people made it seem like they didn’t want to listen to a full album of Drake dance records. Understandable there are a lot of repetitive kick drums and synth sounds on this album.
There are also some gems in the project Liability, Sticky, and of course Jimmy Cooks. I believe expectations weren’t too high for this project I mean how could they be a it was a surprise drop that even his label didn’t know about until the day before it dropped. I will say that people seemed like people expected something different. Maybe people thought it was gonna be a full R&B album but a Dance album caught the industry off guard.
What does this do for Drakes' Legacy he claims he’s coming back with a Scary Hours tape soon. Which to me signals that he hears all the chatter about this latest project. I think this project will speak to Drake being one of the most fearless artists to enter hiphop culture. I think we should celebrate Drake for controlling the narrative in music and taking chances even if we all don’t love it at first (I’m sure that will change)
