COVER STORY/LIL WAYNE
Tunechi, The G.O.A.T. Lil Wayne has been crowned legend for a long time now. He released his first album Tha Block Is Hot 22 years ago and his magnum opus Tha Carter 3 Thirteen years ago. Still, Mr. Carter is one of the veteran rappers fans still get excited about. Hip-Hop is only a 44-year-old genre and we just now starting to see something we’ve never seen in the genre. We are getting a chance to see some of the most legendary rappers age gracefully.
Lil Wayne has done just that in this year alone he’s still rapping toe to toe with Nicki Minaj and Drake on Seeing Green. His verse on that song is arguably one the best verses of the year so far. It might be a little too soon to hand over the crown and retire Wayne’s jersey. Last year one of the songs I played out the most was Wild Dogs by Lil Wayne. It’s almost like Wayne can pick an era and say I feel like being gangsta grillz Wayne or I feel like being No Ceilings Wayne.
Wayne has inspired every artist that came after him. You could honestly make a family tree that leads back to Lil’ Wayne. That tree would probably include Young Thug, Chance The Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and More. Wayne has stayed relevant for over 20 years delivering some of the most entertaining lines in Hip-Hop history.
His record with DJ Khaled THANKFUL, has him officially charting Billboard for 17 consecutive years. A few years back the BET HIP HOP awards honored Lil’ Wayne with the I AM HIPHOP award. Usually, when we honor artists in such a way we are almost sending them off into retirement but not Lil’ Wayne 3 years later he’s still showing us why He is HIPHOP.
