I honestly didn’t know much about Mach-Hommy until I saw a picture with him and Jay-Z back in August of 2020. The Newark, New Jersey rapper is affiliated with some of my favorite rappers and I haven’t heard anything from him. Last year he dropped Mach-Hommy’s Hard Lemonade. The project had me drawing comparisons between Hommy and Mos Def.
“There are so many pop culture references throughout the album. There are allusions to Michael Jackson and 2pac.”
In May he released Pray For Hati. The project shows tremendous growth between projects. One of the biggest differences is Pray For Hati is a Griselda project executive produced by Westside Gunn. Hommy’s raps are very detailed and he uses similes and metaphors that I haven’t heard before or in a while. I love lines “The sun could never be pussy he always come out but somedays he nowhere to be found know what I’m talking about?” from the song Stellar Ray Theory.
Mach-Hommy seems to be sort of an enigma that doesn’t show his face. He isn’t on social media very much. I mean the rollout consisted of a few tweets and pictures from Westside Gunn. Nonetheless, Mach-Hommy delivered a solid project. But once I put the project on it’s hard to turn it off. There are so many pop culture references throughout the album. There are allusions to Michael Jackson and 2pac.
Hopefully, the New Jersey rapper has a long career ahead of him. Jersey’s last megastar was Fetti Wop and Hommy is nothing like him so it’s going to be interesting to see where he takes it. Maybe he’ll even tell us what Hov told him.
