Pros & Cons:
Pros: Certified Lover Boy is full of the Drake we have all come to know in his most polished version. The project is packed with what he does best caption-heavy bars, peeks into the lifestyle we all wished we lived, and going toe-to-toe on songs with some of the game’s best. Majority of the production is stellar and with the likes of Just Blaze and Metroboomin still tapping into some of their best work should serve as insight to the level of the production on this album. The stand out features from Lil Durk, 21 Savage, Lil Wayne, and Kid Cudi offer a thrilling break from Drake. If there is one thing this album makes clear is that Drake is in a league all his own and he is no longer competing with his peers but only his past works and projects.
Cons: This album was LONG awaited, and with a wait like that fans begin to speculate about the potential album more and more. Some of that speculation only harmed the overall project. Boasting a title like Certified Lover Boy you expect almost an overload of love-inspired songs and bars filled with more Drake stories of failed attempts or the ones who got away. However, Certified Lover Boy seems like Drake’s most un-cohesive album to date with many different topics holding his attention. While some are his common themes he chooses to rap about it appears other things better grasped his attention while working on this album, hat-tip to Kanye. Willingly some of us were just too enticed by Drake finally embracing his Lover Boy side and were hoping to get a full album of his best R&B cuts yet. Nontheless, that wasn’t the only harp on the LP. Regardless of some of the amazing production on the album several songs weren’t bettered by some of the beat switches that took place. It is no surprise when Drake enlists the help of top producers in the game to help bring his ideas to life, but when listeners are struggling to identify what the song is trying to be, maybe that beat switch did more harm than good. Overall, the album is a great piece of work with several songs possibly making their way onto a Drake’s Greatest Hits playlist in the future.
