Who doesn’t like to indulge themselves in a cute romantic comedy once in awhile? Especially those that do a great job of putting you in your feels. And even more so, the ones that make you just want to drop everything and search for the love of your life. I know I do! So this month, I decided to review a romantic comedy: Love Dot Com: The Social Experiment.
Black rom-coms… we love to see it! Love Dot Com: The Social Experiment was written and directed by Charneice Fox, and based in Washington, DC. This is a modern movie about single man and woman named Shelby Quinn (Played by Brave Williams) and Greg Jeffries (Played by Tobias Truvillion) who start dating after a run in at the local grocery store. Greg is a handsome businessman of means, while Shelby is a beautiful free spirit who runs a coffee shop. While Greg and Shelby have completely different careers, they actually had a lot in common and were extremely compatible. But that doesn’t seem to be enough for Shelby.
So with that being said, Shelby decides her and Greg should both make accounts on a dating app called “Love Dot Com.” The app had been known to do well with matching based on compatibility by having complete an assessment. But when Shelby and Greg don’t match on the site, she takes it upon herself to suggest they both go on 3 dates, just to see if they find others whom they would be more compatible with.
Love Dot Com: The Social Experiment is not your average rom-com. For one, it actually wasn’t that funny. And two, it wasn’t that predictable. The storyline wasn’t your typical guy meets girl- they fall in love and live happily ever after. I appreciated this, because Shelby’s struggle with accepting the fact that she found a great man who she could connect with, is actually a reality for a lot of black women, and sometimes when you’re in denial, you tend to do a lot of self sabotaging.
Personally, I didn’t enjoy the movie as much as I wanted to, only because it felt really rushed. Don’t get me wrong, the plot was just fine, and the message behind the story was great. However, I would have really liked for them to explore more of Shelby and Greg’s relationship. I wanted to see them fall in love. I wanted to see more of the protagonist’s life during that turning point of her denial. I just wanted more!
Usually rom-com’s tend to be very predictable. And, Love Dot Com: The Social Experiment isn’t that at all. If you are looking for something to make your heart sing, then this wouldn’t be the flick for you. But, I still think it’s a good watch, just because I appreciated the message. Overall the movie is “aiight”. Therefore, I give the it a 5 out of 10.
