The Scope: Woke By Tiffany
Haven’t decided on whether or not you should tune in to Hulu’s newest Original television series, “Woke”? Well, let me give you “The Scope”. Is it worth watching? I can’t lie when I say it took me a few days before I decided to indulge. Only because I didn’t know what I would be getting myself into. However, after doing my research, and seeing the show was actually inspired by the co-creator and award winning African American cartoonist himself, Keith David, I couldn’t help to be a little intrigued. My initial thoughts before watching the show was that it would be a parody. But in the middle of the pilot episode I would see that it definitely tackles the issues of today, in regards to racial injustices: white privilege, police brutality, black mental health and more. However... with a comedic spin. Afterall, who doesn’t love a little sense of humor about traumatic experiences? “Woke” couldn’t be a better example. And no, this isn’t a bad thing. “Woke” stars comedian and actor Lamorne Morris (Known for playing Winston in Fox’s New Girl). He plays the role of Keef Knight. Keef is an African American cartoonist who simply never saw the world as black and white (I’m sure we can all name a few). That is- until one day an incident occured and his life was forever changed. Thus becoming, “woke”, and living his new life through his new perspective. One thing I enjoyed about “Woke” was the fun little spin when it came to adding animation. Every animated moment was appreciated. I especially appreciated the number of black comedians, actors/actresses and writers like Shasheer Zamata (who also starred in the series as Ayana), Nicole Byers, Keith David, and more, that came together to create this show. Because, at that moment, it was apparent that it was written from a place of experience, and not stereotype. This resonated well with me. In that moment, it was time to give it a try. And yes, it’s totally bingeable. I hope you didn’t expect any spoilers. The Scope would never! “Woke” will take you on an interesting, comedic yet traumatic journey with Keef Knight. It will make you laugh, and It’ll make you think. Yet, another show that is intended to spark a conversation. “Woke” may be fiction, but it is also a reality. Definitely worth the binge.
