WHAT HAPPENED TO CHANCE THE RAPPER: CASE STUDY
Chance The Rapper is one of the most creative rappers to release music in the past decade. He has created his style that is influenced by rappers that came before him like Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne. The Rapper is notable for his amazing projects such as Acid Rap and the even more popular Coloring Book Where he won a Grammy for an album that he released for free on streaming platforms. This was a first.
In 2016, You would think with all of this going for him at the time that Chance would become the dominant rapper in the industry for the next 5 Years. At the time I certainly thought that Chance would be on a different tier in the next few years following his 2017 Grammy win for Best Rap Album. Instead in the past 4 years Chance has given us a less music and more movies and TV shows.
Over the past few years, I’ve seen more of Chance on Netflix than anything else and that could be my fault. He was a celebrity judge on Rhythm and Flow a show that was dedicated to finding the next big rap star sort of like the American Idol of the streets. Though this was great for Chance The Rapper many fans wanted to hear more music from him and were starting to demand another album for the Chicago rapper. They wanted him to be more active.
If that wasn’t enough more stories about chance became more and more about things he was going through outside of the studio. This was including lawsuits from former managers. The claims of the managers seemed to be very messy and ego-driven. Was this the reason there was only one album released from Chance in the past 4 years?
Finally, in the summer of 2019 Chance releases the long-awaited album The Big Day. The only problem was it wasn’t received very well by the Hip Hop community. The album was slated as Chance’s debut studio album. Pitch Fork claimed the album that had 22 songs on it was about everything and nothing at the same time. I believe that somewhere along the line Chance The Rapper became less relatable than he was in 2017.
