You know that feeling that creates an endless dark hole in your stomach, you lose your drive and you can care less about anything regarding the outside world; even yourself? Let’s say it together, depression. I think depression is a reminder of who we are and how strong we can be.Yes, it took for you to be at your lowest but at some point you reached your highest potential.
I like to think that music is the all around healer; there’s not one song that anyone can’t think of to play that makes them feel good. Music creates this unmatchable feeling; whether you're in tune with the lyrics, the music or the artist. It’s that special thing we were all blessed with, something that resonates a connection to the song.
I’ve battled with depression before and the one thing that kept me sane was crying and writing. I didn’t consider how music could’ve had a positive impact on my process because I could’ve come across that one song a day that made me feel good. I always thought when people are sad they play sad songs to get them deeper into the ‘sad’ mood, but does that always work? I like to call them “sad boy tracks”, songs that embrace the full sadness but kinda go hard.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Steve Lacy, I was first introduced to him as a part of ‘The Internet’. His solo albums/EP’s are the same aesthetic of music he makes with The Internet, but more of his vision. He just released an album, “Gemini Rights”, which has a new sound for him but still the same Steve. My favorite “sad boy” track on the album is ‘Bad Habits’. It’s got such a smooth vibe and he’s talking about his problems with a female friend and it’s something one can relate to. What makes it a sad boy track is the guitars and the melodies. Steve may not be as sad as the person listening to it, but he was a little salty in the end.
Songs like these are always the best because someone else put me on to the song. It’s from her album “Roses in the Dark”, called ‘Sideways’. The first time I heard it, I immediately thought it was “too smooth”. I've always been a fan of Cleo Sol but this one fell right through the cracks because it's a top-tier sad boy track. It’s more so the beat that gets you caught up more in your feelings but her voice is so calm and soothing, that you can’t help but get lost in the sauce.
Tems came in fast and smooth with her voice and presence in general. She has such a lovely voice, she’ll do any bridge on any song justice. You hear more of her as an artist in her own songs, especially with “Higher” on the ‘For Broken Ear EP. The line “If the world was ending, would you cry or would you come and get me?”; really makes you think about what it means to love someone and everything they are willing to do. To be in that moment of questioning everything in such little time. Not sure who hurt Tens but it's clear in the song she was hurting and I feel more connected to the song each time I listen.
Love this!
